The essence of Székelykeve

We spoke with Leona Bíró, a volunteer from the “Tinet” youth organization.

When we asked her what she loves most about the festival, she shared that it brings people together. Many, both locals and those who have moved away, plan their summer vacations around this celebration to come back and celebrate St. Stephen’s Day in their hometown. Along with the market stalls and the sense of nostalgia, the organizers ensure great entertainment with live concerts. The performers are local or from surrounding Hungarian-speaking communities.

We spoke with Erness Komáromi, who hasn’t lived in Székelykeve for ten years, just like many others. This led to a discussion about the declining Hungarian population in the village and how the youth of the Tinet organization is holding the community together. Currently, the percentage of Hungarians in the village is between 60-70%, but he nostalgically reflected on the situation ten years ago when it was around 90%.

He highlighted the local Hungarian Cuisine Days, an event where, just like now, those who moved abroad return home. With a big smile, he sent a message to all fellow citizens who haven’t yet attended these festive days, warmly inviting everyone to come and be part of the celebration!

Anđela Milošević returned home from Germany to her hometown, Székelykeve, for the festival. She emphasized how much she appreciates the village’s dedication to preserving its traditions.

She believes the key difference between city festivals and the local celebration is that, despite being a small town, the locals take their work seriously, putting their heart and soul into the activities during these days.
